Neville Gardner’s Marathon Training Tips

Our friend and local Spartan Legend, Neville Gardner will be running his 40th Medibank Melbourne Marathon this year. He’s been kind enough to share the knowledge he’s acquired along his journey in a series of tips to assist you in your preparation leading up to and on race day. So here it goes, words from the great man himself: Tip Series One:  Register as early as you can to encourage yourself to commit. Before you commence training, it is advisable to get a medical check. Prepare a 14 week training program and begin with two pairs of quality running shoes. This is important, as you want to alternate between each pair to ensure your feet have adjusted to the shoes while not wearing them down too much before race day. During the first 3 weeks of your training: Jog/walk up to 15-20km each week. It is recommended that you do not increase your weekly kilometres by more than 45% over the total of the previous weeks distance. Your diet should include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and foods high in protein and carbohydrates. Limit your intake of sports drinks and hydrate mainly with water. Train with a running partner if possible and try to run at a pace so that you can talk comfortably while running Tip Series Two:   Incorporate at least 2 x 25-32km long runs on the Sundays commencing on the 8th and 10th weeks of training, with rest day on the following day (Monday). Remember to listen to your body for soreness or tiredness, don’t be afraid to have a rest day. Stay tuned for Tip Series Three. Neville Gardner
